BEAM Features
Full logging, encrypted transfers and LDAP just scratch the surface.
Go ahead, introduce us to your IT security department – they’ll like us. BEAM was built from the ground up to be the most secure medical imaging transfer network ever built. And to top it off, we’re one of the easiest systems to install.
- We start by running BEAM on a hardened, locked down Linux OS. Plug it in, turn it on and then call us for the authentication key to our network.
- All messages sent and received are encrypted, transferred over SSL, and authenticated by the destination system.
- All imaging studies are encrypted and transferred over SSL.
- BEAM-to-BEAM transfers are peer-to-peer (P2P), which means they are not stored on our servers and they travel in half the time of cloud-based image sharing solutions.
- Only authenticated users are allowed access to the BEAM appliance, which can be controlled via LDAP authentication with your Microsoft Active Directory servers or by BEAM itself.
- For standard BEAM transfers, no software is required on clients, thereby reducing security vulnerabilities.
- Image transfers occur only when both sides approve the transfer. This keeps you from inadvertently sending images to the wrong facility.
- BEAM can restrict access by IP or a range of IPs.
- BEAM provides transfer, audit, and security access logging. So you know the what, when, where, and who of all transfers; the play-by-play of each transfer; and the what, when, where, and who of all login attempts.
- If you’ve read this far and you’re keeping a tally, that’s a lot of layers of protection.
Did we mention that your legal department might like us, too? We help you comply with HIPAA and provide better care at lower cost. And that should make your accounting department like us, too.
Download, install, configure, train, go live in 4 hours.
BEAM is very easy to install. And that’s what our customers tell us. Once you turn on the appliance, you can be transferring studies within a half hour and fully trained within two hours! How does that compare with your latest IT project? Of course, your PACS needs to be configured to accept DICOM connectivity from BEAM. If you’re installing BEAM in your DMZ, then BEAM needs access to the Internet and the PACS, and end users need browser HTTPS access to BEAM.
Here’s a job tip: take a few hours and get BEAM installed and operational, let us train your staff and you’ve just liberated your facility from the 20th century CD ball and chain. Then, put that on your resume.
No custom software to install or upgrade. PC, Mac, IE, Firefox, Safari.
BEAM is browser friendly. That is, you can use BEAM from a PC running Internet Explorer 6 and higher, or Firefox 3 and higher. Chrome works as well. Mac users are not left out either because BEAM works with Safari. No special browser downloads or ActiveX installs are required to transfer studies with BEAM. Users wanting to attach files or upload CDs will need to install Java.
If systems go down, BEAM recovers gracefully.
We designed BEAM to recover gracefully even though BEAM is dependent on many systems outside our control. An image transfer between two facilities travels through two different sets of internal networks, firewalls, ISPs, and PACS, any of which could go down. Here is how BEAM behaves if:
- A PACS goes down – BEAM waits and retries. When the PACS is back on-line, BEAM continues the transfer.
- The network goes down – BEAM waits and retries. When the network is available, BEAM continues the transfer.
- The Power goes out – If BEAM is shutdown in the middle of a transfer, when BEAM is turned back on, it resumes where it left off. Magic? Not at all. BEAM uses advanced stateless technology.
For increased fault tolerance, we strongly recommend installing BEAM on a virtual machine (VM) host, which will allow you to take full advantage of the fault tolerance and disaster recovery benefits included in VM farms. Best of all, a BEAM VM is lightweight – 1 GB RAM, 30 GB disk, single processor.
Support is included for all BEAM customers: 24x7x365.
Our support is US-based and available 8-5 Monday – Friday Pacific Time. Support for critical issues is available 24x7x365.

No big servers, no CDs, no shipping, no travel, no paper.
If you install BEAM, you’ll be quite environmentally friendly. Here’s your score card:
- No CD production. Check. BEAM transfers all images and files electronically so no need to create a CD, shred it, and send it to a landfill.
- No shipping. Check. Reduce your carbon footprint and avoid shipping CDs. FedEx, couriers and taxis are costly so you’ll also save the other green: money.
- No big servers. Check. Install BEAM on your VM host (no shipping) and we won’t take up much space or resources. BEAM runs on 1 GB RAM, 30 GB disk, single processor. In fact, we run so light that we can be deployed on netbook computers.
- No printed manuals. Check. Our manuals are all electronic. And, if you do print our quick start user guide, it’s only two pages long.
- Web-based training. Check. We conduct our training via webinars and a single one hour class is all users need. Students can attend from their desktops so no travel is required. Although, we are available for on-site training, our customers have found that our on-line training hits the mark.
- No paper billing. Check. OneMedNet sends all bills electronically.
